Manager, Health & Safety

The Company

Our client is an intermediate exploration and production company operating in Western Canada.

The Opportunity

Reporting to the Director, Environment & Safety, the Manager, Health & Safety will be responsible for leading the company in Health & Safety strategies, systems, and standards to improve safety performance by continuously increasing a level of awareness of safety standards throughout the company

Key accountabilities and responsibilities:

  • Provide guidance and support to the Field Safety Coordinator and internal stakeholders through continuous coaching, feedback and, professional development and training
  • Monitor and assess site safety procedures and perform audits and provide feedback and recommendations for improvement
  • Provides leadership by advising and coaching stakeholders in the interpretation and application of safety legislation and safe work practices and procedures
  • Overall governance of the safety policies, procedures and practices
  • Promotes the company’s Health & Safety Management System (HSMS)
  • Collaborates with the Field Safety Coordinator to conduct field tours, inspections, training sessions, audits to enhance the HSMS and be accountable to encourage safe work behaviors / attitudes through an active field presence
  • Lead incident investigations relating to high severity or high potential incidents, and ensure that proper regulatory reporting is completed.
  • Facilitate investigations related to medium and low potential events
  • Communicate & respond to government agency requests on behalf of the company
  • Develop and report as weekly and as required
  • Participate in Monthly Safety Meetings
  • Organize, lead and participate safety stand down
  • Develop and/or maintain the HSMS components such as safety award system, onboarding training, reporting, PPE, occupational hygiene, hazard reporting, working alone
  • Communicate to employees of all areas in order to encourage Health & Safety participation
  • Provide creative solutions and effective problem solving of issues that arise within the field environment i.e. troubleshooting, flagging deficiencies and recommending changes to current practices
  • Support of management decisions with honest and open communication with all employees
  • Lead the company into establishing a COR

The Individual

The preferred candidate profile would include the following skills, experience, credentials and personal attributes:

Education and Experience:

  • Recognized Post-Secondary education in Health & Safety and related designation would be an asset such as:
    • Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP)
    • National Construction Safety Officer ( NCSO)
    • Construction Safety Supervisor (CSO)
  • Ten to 15 years of experience in Health &Safety Management
  • Extensive experience in designing and implementing safety and environmental programs
  • Proven track record in management and ability to plan and implement change
  • Knowledge of Workers Compensation Legislation
  • Previous experience in oil and gas
