Environmental Specialist

Our client is a Western Canadian-based energy company.
The Opportunity
Reporting to the Team Lead, Environment, the Environmental Specialist will be responsible for ensuring that water usage and waste generation are occurring in a responsible, compliant and efficient manner.
Key accountabilities and responsibilities:
- Reviews, interprets and advises on activities associated with water usage and waste generation
- Analyzes trends to assess gaps and environmental risk
- Develops programs and implements initiatives to optimize water use and waste activities resulting in cost savings and environmental benefits
- Works with the Field Environmental Coordinator to implement, train and educate Drilling & Completions and Pipeline & Operations staff on the efficient use of water and characterization of waste streams
- Develops and maintains the EMS to ensure compliance and proactive environmental stewardship specific to water management strategy and waste management
- Advises the Surface Land and Construction business units to appropriate environmental mitigation techniques, COP notifications and Water Act approvals
- Develops and coordinates the pipeline and water course crossing inspection program
- Tracks water and waste inventory/metrics and ensure appropriate reporting obligations specific to water and waste are met
- Assesses field operations and presents environmental results and opportunities for improvement
- Manages environmental providers to realize efficiencies
- Negotiates preferred waste receiver rates and advise on waste generation disposal areas
The Individual
The preferred candidate profile would include the following skills, experience, credentials and personal attributes:
- A minimum of seven years of direct experience working in the Oil & Gas industry specializing in environmental affairs
- Bachelor’s degree or post-secondary technical diploma in Environmental Studies or related discipline
- Professional designation (i.e. P.Bio, P.Ag) would be preferred
- Broad experience and understanding of the Federal and Provincial (Western Canada) regulatory framework
- An understanding of varying field duties and safe work practices
- Ability to undertake a variety of project related tasks
- Previous experience managing projects and/or in related roles
- Exceptional accuracy and attention to detail
- Strong interpersonal and leadership skills
- Excellent communication and technical writing skills
- Strong computer skills, including exceptional proficiency in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.
- Makes independent decisions within broad guidelines and policies
